Peter "The Lost Boys of Sudan"

A civil war has been going on in Sudan for more than 20 years and affecting the lifestyles of many different people living in these areas of war. The Dinka tribe was one of the most affected, while many where killed some youth survived to carry on the religion and culture of this tribe. Peter one of these survivors was a baby when his parents split up, when running away after their camp had been raided, his mother ran away with the rest of his family wile he and his dad ran a different way. At the age of 4 Peter found his father dead, and had to survive by himself and also find a refugee camp by himself. Along the way many others joined them including girls and boys from different tribes all surviving on their own. Years later after joining up or surviving on their own many "Lost boys" arrived in Kenya where they sought for asylum in a refugee camp. This camp provided better living conditions and a education for these children, another chance at life. The children grew together and everyone in these camps became friends knowing each other very well. Years later 4000 'Dinka' boys where chosen to migrate from Kenya to the United States where they believed they would have a better life.
These boys where called "The Lost Boys", where there where about 4000 of them, one of which was Peter, whom a documentary was made about to follow his journey of migration. Peter migrated from 'Kenya' to Houston, Texas, where he found life very difficult, nothing like the heaven he told his friends he was going too. He faced many problems one of which was communication to other people, where he thought people did not understand him and he found that he couldn't understand other people completely either. Him and his fellow friend all had the same problem and overcame it by not only talking in their native language to each other but also by talking in English to each other.
Peter was facing many different problems which he had to solve really fast, he needed to be able to speak English to be able to go into the education program, which is why he wanted to go to America, but also he had to manage the rent of his house and pay for his own food with the little money he received from his job. Thus leading his to a crossroad, to leave his friends and go pursue his dream or stay and live in the harsh conditions he is living in now and never get the education he wanted. Peter made a crucial decision and left his friends behind and went on to get an education at a high school. Here Peter first had problems with his lifestyle, where he had to survive on his own with no friend around, but also go to school, go to work, finish his homework , and also eat at the same time, this was a very difficult time for Peter but eventually it all pays off. Peter finds a job at 'Wall-mart' where he faces prejudice, but this doesn't only happen there it happens with the counselor at school when he is asking to do a test for collage as well.
Prejudice is a major problem Peter had to overcome, this is because he was a different color compared to the 'white' Americans but also a darker 'black' compared to the normal African Americans. People assumed that he would hurt them just due to his skin color and this was absolutely not on his mind, people assumed he was lazy and not capable of succeeding. An example of prejudice would be when working at wall-mart, the manager tells him, people of his skin color can work outside in the sun all day because they are from Africa and Africa is hot. This not only impacts his but others who see this happening because they notice, the cruelty that Peter is being put through but don't do anything about it due to his skin color. One more example of this would be the councilor, at Peter's high school, peter wanted to do a test which allowed him to go into a 4 year collage, but the councilor said " you don't need to do that test, its only for people who are going to do 4 years of collage, you can just apply for a community collage." However Peter surpassed his expectations by having a recommendation by the "Honor Society" and also by having the "bibliography" needed for the test. The councilor deemed Peter's story "too sad", another implication that he did not expect Peter to make it this far.
All these are implications that although people know the difficulties that Peter has faced there is still racism going on and Peter had overcome that racism by urging to go forth and never giving up on his dreams.
Peter had to overcome many other obstacles, another one of which was the obstacle of fitting in with his peers and being able to get a girlfriend, but also being able to find a religious group he would fit into. Peter had gone to a church group with one of his friends but you could observe his behaveyour and look at his face and see that he wasnt enjoying himself, i believe this was due to the fact that he did not completely believe in this religion and didnt know how to fit in while all this was happening. Peter is willing and is able to merge into the religions and normal life of the american community but finds it difficult due to the amount of money he has and the fact that he has to send money back to his friend in Africa. Although he was a refugee in the past he proves to others not to underestimate him just because of his past, he is a brilliant, enthusiastic person who strives to achieve more in his life.
