“O pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth, That I am meek and gentle with these butchers. Thou art the ruins of the noblest man That ever lived in the tide of times. Woe to the hands that shed this costly blood.” (pg 124) Just before Antony gave out the soliloquy, after Caesars death, he was drawn away from protecting his noble friend so that the conspirators could ‘purge Rome’ without any interruptions. Caesar was Antony’s best friend and Antony loved him like no other. Due to not being able to protect his friend and also his friend being backstabbed by his “angel” dove him over the edge, making his loyalty to Caesar into a weapon of revenge against the conspirators. This is where Antony’s true emotions show allowing you to see how well he knew Caesar, but also allowing you to see his ingratitude toward Brutus and the other conspirators. Antony’s ‘Loyalty’ toward Caesar is so strong and willing that Antony will do anything for him and especially avenge him from his unrighteous death. His loyalty toward Caesar is so strong he is willing to take ‘Revenge’ against the people who spilled this “Costly blood”. After Caesar’s death Antony is driven by his love for Caesar and the urge to get revenge against the conspirators, both these feelings are motivated by his loyalty toward Caesar, and thus urging Antony to go forth and fight for righteousness and justice against the conspirators (murderers).
Antony a man whom has the ability to turn people and make them agree with him, a person who stays loyal to his friends even after they die, A person who can stand out even at the toughest of times. Antony uses his loyalty to persuade others but also to draw him forth, leading him, implying and helping him to choose what to do next. Antony is drawn and acts in this way due to his love and affections toward Caesar. He was his “friend faithful and just to” him, Antony wanted the best for Caesar and due to that he is driven by his memories of the good Caesar has done for Rome, Antony believes Caesar had helped Rome not bring it down and due to that Caesars death was for no reason what so ever. Antony is amazed but also ungrateful for what has happened to his friend, this is shown to you during his funeral speech and where he is turning the public people to his side making them understand what Caesar was to him. “You all did love him once and not without cause… And men have lost their reason. Bear with me. My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it come back to me.”(pg 134) This is saying to the public that they all did love Caesar once, and not without cause, Antony is trying to persuade the public into siding with him, and trying to prove that Caesars death was un-honorable. Through-out Antony’s speech you catch many hints of verbal irony and it is riddled with spurs that the public people can understand, but at the same time not disregarding his promise to the conspirators. Antony also shows his ‘Loyalty” to Caesar by saying “My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it come back to me.” this is showing ‘Loyalty’ by saying he gave his heart to Caesar, and doesn’t want it back, but a heart cant remain in a dead body or else it will stop functioning. By giving his heart to Caesar he has proven and given complete loyalty to Caesar and will do anything to uphold that loyalty. Antony’s loyalty toward Caesar is also shown when he is alone talking to Caesars immobilized, dead body. He talks as if Caesar was still alive apologizing to him and stating that he is sorry for being nice and gentle with the conspirators. “I am meek and gentle with these butchers. “Thou art the ruins of the noblest man That ever lived in the tide of time. “ Antony is praising Caesar but at the same time apologizing due to betrayal and especially his death. Antony shows loyalty toward Caesar by stating he is the noblest man that ever lived in the dawn of time, this one shows praise toward him but most of all loyalty, showing you how well Antony knew Caesar but also showing you his love and affection towards him. Antony is loyal toward Caesar but that loyalty if conjured with will become a weapon against the conspirators.
Antony is driven by his loyalty toward Caesar to get revenge against the conspirators, thus so he gains power through the people and with mass numbers, hoping to overrun the conspirators and ring justice to Caesars death. Antony acts in this manor after Caesars death because he believes Caesar was a noble man, helping Rom move forward and allowing it to grown and progress. I don’t believe Antony wanted to start a war, but I believe he was willing to do so if needed, to bring justice against and too the conspirators. I also believe once he had the public people on his side they urged him to continue. –Out of time- -the conclusion ---à
Antony wanted to avenge his friend, the noble Caesar, but also bring justice and righteousness to the conspirators. He was led by his eagerness to revenge his friend the noble Caesar but also the loyalty he had toward is beloved friend. Loyalty and Revenge made Antony act in ways you could have never imagined and thus giving you the feeling of Caesars importance toward him. Antony made his goal clear when he stated he wanted to do wrong to Brutus and Cassius, and in the end hat goal was accomplished, Brutus and Cassius where both noble and killed themselves. Under that statement I believe Antony fully accomplished his goal of avenging his noble and loyal friend Caesar. This goal was accomplished through a somewhat civil war and a choice of persuading the public onto his side, due to the mass numbers and people on Antony’s side and the ability to notice that they have done wrong, both Brutus and Cassius, where denied by their own men. This act of Antony’s was one of worthy cause because Caesar wasn’t doing anything bad for Rome but things of somewhat good. Due to the assassination Antony was able to do what he thought was right and what was right to the public. Antony did the right thing in my perspective and due to that I believe it was of worthy cause to do what he did when he did it.
